Belarus’ housing policy lacks resources to put it in action

In Belarus, housing loans fell by 36.1% in January-February 2014. Limited budgetary resources and negative economic results have prompted the government to curtail preferential lending in housing sector. Giving state support to housing construction has long been one of President Lukashenko’s priorities, as a way of ensuring popular support for the Belarusian socio-economic model. However, in the coming years, the government will continue to reduce state support for housing construction due to a lack of resources. More pertinently, it will continue to cut social benefits to the population.
